What cyber security does a small business actually need?

Do we need to comply with the Essential Eight?
The Essential Eight is mandatory for federal government entities but voluntary for private business, and increasingly expected anyway: insurers, enterprise customers and regulators all use it as the yardstick for reasonable security. How would we know if we have already been breached?
